Nvidia has disclosed that worldwide production capacity for its chips and systems could fall short of customer needs by roughly $100 billion in 2027, according to commentary from the company's latest earnings call analyzed by CRN. The chipmaker reported a 106 percent year-over-year jump in revenue to $96.2 billion for the period ending in June, but executives said annual sales could double next year if not for significant supply constraints across its supplier network. The situation shows how Nvidia is fueling the market's rapid expansion while simultaneously contributing to industry-wide shortages through its own financial maneuvers to convert demand into sales.
During the second-quarter earnings call in late August, Nvidia CFO Colette Kress said the company forecasts 70 percent revenue growth for next year, which would bring its sales to nearly $700 billion based on Wall Street's average estimate of $411 billion for the current fiscal year. Kress noted that customer forecasts point to Nvidia's growth doubling next year, but the company expects to hit only 70 percent because of supply limitations. CEO Jensen Huang told analysts that "our entire supply chain is challenged, and it's everybody. Everybody is really running flat out." The biggest constraint cited by executives is memory chips, with Kress acknowledging that extreme pricing conditions have exceeded prior expectations and are headed even higher into next year. For channel partners, these shortages have translated into lead times stretching as long as a year, along with fast-rising prices for systems.
The report finds that Nvidia is increasingly using its financial muscle beyond traditional equity investments to keep demand flowing. The company agreed last month to provide a guarantee of up to $105 billion for a massive Ohio data center that will be leased to OpenAI, with payments set to trigger if the AI lab defaults on the lease or fails to make payments. Nvidia may also put up as much as $125 billion in "residual-value support" for partnerships with Goldman Sachs and Blackstone, which plan to pool $500 billion in capital for AI infrastructure purchases. Kress defended these moves against critics who call them "circular financing," saying frontier AI labs "have rapidly growing customer demand yet still lack the decades-long infrastructure contracts and investment-grade financing capacity needed to secure the AI factory infrastructure independently."
The report explains that Nvidia's backstops and guarantees are opening new opportunities for channel partners, particularly in the neocloud market. Chris Kapusta, vice president of advisory and transformation at Dallas-based Nvidia systems integration partner GDT, told CRN that his company has already benefited because some of its roughly 20 neocloud customers have received equity investments to help them buy AI hardware. He said the new alternative funding mechanisms will pave the way for even more deals, noting that "you can't run any of this without data center space and power cooling racks, everything else, so this allows other services and product sales and things that go along with all of this that benefit the channel as well." Richard Rudometkin, vice president of global sales at Illinois-based Nvidia partner International Computer Concepts, said demand for AI infrastructure from his customers is "nonstop," and he doesn't think "the need or the desire is going to go anywhere."
Looking ahead, the report indicates that despite recent calls for a slowdown in AI development from industry leaders including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman due to safety concerns, analysts have not yet seen any impact on hardware demand. Brad Gastwirth, global head of research at Massachusetts-based Circular Technology, wrote that "while the governance and safety debate is worth watching, we do not believe it changes the near-term infrastructure outlook." Kapusta of GDT said he hasn't seen any newfound cautiousness from AI infrastructure customers, noting that "we haven't seen full enterprise adoption at scale of what's even out there today, so I still think there's pent-up demand to even bring some of the functionality and capabilities that exist today on the market into a number of enterprise and clients." The core challenge remains Nvidia's ability to secure more production capacity from memory suppliers Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron, even as those strategic partners work closely with the company to increase the capacity its road map requires. The arrangement reveals a tension that will shape competitive dynamics as vendors race to lock in component supplies while customers weigh the tradeoffs of cloud deployment against long waits for on-premises infrastructure.
