A newly released Android application allows smartphone users to help people in oppressive countries access the internet by turning their devices into privacy-protecting proxies, according to a report by ZDNet. Snowflake Volunteer, developed through a partnership between Android app studio Bloco, the Tor Network, and Guardian Project, landed on the Google Play Store as a single-purpose tool that gives volunteers control over when and how they contribute their internet connections. The app builds on the Tor Project's Snowflake technology, which first appeared in 2019, and is designed for individuals living in countries that allow Tor access who want to extend that freedom to others.

By May, after launching in April, Tor recorded roughly 1,300 unique proxy IP addresses actively working in the pool each day, according to the report. A month later, this had risen to approximately 1,700 Snowflake proxies, representing a month-by-month increase of 29%. At its height, there were over 2,100 active daily proxies. The app requires no technical knowledge to operate and doesn't require users to sign up for an account or grant advanced smartphone permissions. Snowflake Volunteer is currently available in eight languages through Google Play and F-Droid, with open-source code accessible on GitHub.

The report explains that Snowflake simulates a user's traffic as a video call via WebRTC while actually routing requests through proxies and maintaining "short-lived" connections that are constantly moving, making them difficult to block. According to the developers, there's no risk to volunteers when someone connects to their proxy, as "their visible browsing IP address will match their Tor exit node, not yours (since you're an entry point)." Users can control the app through several settings, including running it only when charging, only on Wi-Fi rather than cellular connections, allowing background use, and limiting simultaneous connections to up to five people at once.

The report notes that the more individuals who install and run either the traditional Snowflake package or lightweight Snowflake Volunteer, the more robust and ever-changing the network becomes, which means it will be far more difficult for oppressive regimes to block. Battery testing conducted over three hours with up to five simultaneous connections showed power drain from 88% to 79%, suggesting minimal impact on typical smartphone use. The app connects users who need a proxy to access the Tor Network, which allows people to reach online websites and services typically blocked at the ISP level by states and oppressive governments while reducing the risk of being tracked through anonymized volunteer-run nodes.

The report concludes that Snowflake Volunteer is "an impressive app that can quietly assist others living in oppressive countries" and predicts the community of users will grow steadily over time, especially as volunteers realize there's no technical expertise required to help out. The app's design allows it to run quietly and unobtrusively, contributing to fighting global censorship without inconveniencing users. While the numbers are rising, the report emphasizes there's still work to do in building out the proxy network to make it sufficiently robust against blocking attempts by censoring governments.
