The changes reflect what Google describes as a supplier-driven shortage forcing trade-offs between storage capacity, memory specifications, and pricing.
The Pixel 11 Pro is priced at $1,099, the Pro XL at $1,299, and the Pro Fold at $1,899, while the Pixel Watch 5 costs $399. Google doubled the base storage across the Pixel 11 and Pixel 11 Pro lineup to 256GB, but customers who want 16GB of RAM in Pro models must purchase more expensive configurations. The Pixel 11 Pro requires at least $1,219 for 16GB of memory, while the Pro XL needs at least $1,419. Both the Pixel 9 and Pixel 10 Pro models included 16GB of RAM in their equivalent base configurations.
A Google spokesperson told Engadget that "the tech industry is navigating a severe, supplier-driven RAM shortage" and that the company adjusted pricing and memory configurations to deliver maximum value for customers. The company also said that software and chip-level optimization should enable the new Pro models to run faster and more smoothly than last year's comparable 256GB models. Apple has similarly warned about steep increases in memory prices, the report notes.
The memory reduction carries extra weight as Google pushes its Gemini AI deeper into the Pixel ecosystem. New features include Rambler, built to interpret less structured speech, and expanded camera-based access to Circle to Search, while the Pixel Watch 5 adds Gemini-powered health coaching. That makes the RAM cut a more significant consumer consideration than it would be on a traditional phone, since Google is betting that tighter hardware-software integration can offset reduced memory even as its AI ambitions require increasingly capable hardware. For typical users focused on messaging, browsing, and streaming, the difference may prove hard to detect, but more demanding tasks like gaming and video editing could make the lower memory ceiling more apparent, Engadget reported.
