OpenAI's advertising operation has grown from a new experiment to a billion-dollar business in fewer than 200 days, providing the artificial intelligence firm with a fresh revenue stream to support its fast expansion. The company announced Monday that ChatGPT Ads reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate less than 200 days after launch, creating a quickly expanding income source beyond subscriptions and enterprise contracts. The milestone shows how OpenAI is building a wider business model around ChatGPT as it seeks to fund access to its platform, which now serves more than 1 billion weekly active users.

The $1 billion figure projects current monthly ad revenue across a full year rather than reflecting $1 billion already earned. Tens of thousands of advertisers now use the platform, which operates in more than 40 countries, according to OpenAI. The company is rolling out self-service advertising through Ads Manager across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. OpenAI's revenue now comes from multiple sources including consumer subscriptions, enterprise products, usage-based APIs and advertising, with ads showing up in ChatGPT's Free and Go tiers. A major change arrived in May when OpenAI opened Ads Manager to more advertisers, and small and midsized businesses now represent a "material share" of the business.

The company says its advertising platform can use the context of an ongoing conversation to display relevant ads, while depending on location and user settings it may also draw on information from a person's wider ChatGPT experience. OpenAI states that ads are clearly marked and separated from ChatGPT's responses, that advertisers can't access users' private conversations, and that advertising doesn't influence the answers ChatGPT generates. Most campaigns now rely on cost-per-click or outcome-optimized bidding, while the company has introduced tools for measurement, targeting and conversion tracking, according to Axios. OpenAI has also established a network of more than 50 technology and measurement partners as it strengthens its global partnerships strategy, creating opportunities for agencies, adtech providers and consultants to help clients build campaigns and measure performance.

The self-service model matters because it can grow an advertising business well beyond large brands and agency relationships, letting OpenAI tap a much wider market of smaller advertisers. ChatGPT users often show up with specific intentions like researching software, planning projects, learning topics or comparing products, making the context valuable to advertisers. While the $1 billion run rate marks a significant achievement, OpenAI's goals stretch much further. The company has told investors it expects to generate $2.5 billion in advertising revenue this year and is aiming for $100 billion by 2030, making ChatGPT Ads far more than a monetization experiment—it could become central to how OpenAI funds access to its services, especially the free tier.

OpenAI says its next phase will bring more markets, ad formats, campaign objectives, buying options and measurement tools, and the company plans to explore ways for businesses to interact with consumers more naturally inside ChatGPT. That evolution could establish ChatGPT as a major new advertising channel, though the report notes its long-term success may depend less on how quickly OpenAI sells ads than on whether users continue to trust the answers surrounding them. The advertising expansion positions OpenAI to compete with established platforms while funding broader access to its AI technology, but sustaining user confidence will require careful balance between commercial growth and product integrity.
