Sophos has partnered with OpenAI to embed frontier AI models into Sophos Fusion, providing managed service providers with enhanced capabilities for AI security, governance, detection, and response. The collaboration aims to help MSPs convert sophisticated AI technology into actionable security services for clients while opening pathways for recurring revenue growth. Sophos announced it's also joining an expanded version of OpenAI's Daybreak Cyber Partner Program focused on managed security services.
The partnership centers on three dimensions of AI-related cybersecurity. Sophos Endpoint blocks exploitation techniques so that vulnerabilities discovered by AI face the same defensive barriers as known weaknesses, while the company's agentic security operations center resolves 52% of incidents end-to-end through AI in an average of 89 seconds. The OpenAI integration is designed to layer frontier model capabilities onto Sophos' existing AI-native infrastructure rather than retrofitting AI onto legacy systems. Additionally, Sophos AI Defense offers organizations insight into AI and shadow AI usage, policy enforcement, and governance over how confidential data moves across AI models and tools.
"We wanted to ensure that AI and frontier AI models were built into our Fusion system," Chris Bell, Senior Vice President of Global Channels, Alliances, and Corporate Development at Sophos, told Channel Insider. He emphasized that MSPs increasingly field questions from clients about employee AI usage and whether it's being applied responsibly, with visibility into AI adoption and protection against AI-powered threats ranking as two top concerns. Bell identified AI governance—particularly tracking which employees use which AI tools and whether they're authorized to do so—as another critical area for MSPs, alongside the need to connect visibility across endpoint, network, cloud, and identity environments.
According to the announcement, the combination positions MSPs to translate frontier cybersecurity capabilities into practical outcomes because they understand client environments and run the workflows organizations depend on. Bell noted that while Sophos has embedded AI into its core platform for years, the company can't build everything internally and stay ahead of attackers, making the OpenAI partnership essential for improving detections, accelerating response, and elevating security results. Sophos will increase technical training to help MSPs build services around Fusion and its AI features, focusing on response automation, AI governance, and AI security posture management to speed up investigations and free MSPs for higher-value work. Bell pointed to governance, offensive security, and automated response as areas where MSPs can develop customer services and recurring revenue streams.
Looking ahead, Sophos and OpenAI are exploring how to bundle the company's ecosystem and offerings—including AI Defense—with OpenAI's frontier models into commercially viable packages that can be distributed efficiently through the channel. "Our MSP community, as well as our channel community, can sleep at night knowing that we have a platform that will help protect them," Bell stated, adding that Sophos handles the security outcomes while partners concentrate on building businesses around the platform. The collaboration reflects a division of labor: Sophos CTO John Peterson wrote that customers gain frontier-grade defense they'd struggle to build in-house, since most organizations can't hire the scarce talent required or shoulder the capacity and financial burdens of operating frontier AI in their own security operations. For channel partners watching AI reshape both threat landscapes and service portfolios, the test will be whether integrating frontier models into everyday workflows actually delivers measurable client outcomes or simply adds another layer of complexity to an already crowded security stack. If MSPs can't translate AI capabilities into services clients understand and value, even the most advanced models risk becoming expensive overhead rather than revenue engines.
