Microsoft's September 2026 Patch Tuesday update for Windows 11 addresses a record 995 security vulnerabilities while finally allowing users to reposition the taskbar to any edge of the screen, according to a September 10 report from ZDNET. The monthly rollout combines long-requested interface improvements with the largest batch of security fixes the company has ever released in a single update. Users can now move the taskbar from its default bottom position to the top, left, or right side of the screen, matching functionality that's been available in Windows 10 for years.

The update, designated as KB5124012 for Windows 11 26H1, KB5124008 for Windows 11 25H2/24H2, and KB5122880 for Windows 11 23H2, lets users shrink the taskbar to a smaller size and adjust icon dimensions through a new drop-down menu. After repositioning the taskbar to the left or right side, users can switch alignment between top and left, though the auto-hide feature only works when the taskbar sits at the bottom of the screen. The Start menu now offers size options between Small and Large, or an Automatic setting that adjusts based on monitor resolution. Microsoft renamed the Recommended section to Recent and added granular controls to independently show or hide the Pinned, Recommended, and All sections. The Search window has been stripped of clutter like top apps, AI tools, and promotions, now displaying only suggested or recent searches.

The September release includes 121 critical vulnerabilities and two zero-day exploits, both classified as elevation-of-privilege flaws. Patch management provider Action1 stated the volume is "unlike anything we've seen before and just shy of the 1,000 mark." The two zero-days affect the Windows Update Stack (CVE-2026-81963) and Windows Advanced Local Procedure Call, or ALPC (CVE-2026-85880). If exploited, the Update Stack vulnerability could let an attacker gain system-level privileges and potentially take control of the compromised PC, then disable security controls, install malware, steal sensitive information, and modify or delete data. The ALPC flaw, which could also allow an attacker to gain System-level privileges, has already been actively exploited in the wild.

Microsoft has been working to improve Windows 11 in areas like reliability, performance, stability, and usability after nearly five years of criticism over missing features that were standard in Windows 10. The company has reduced AI integration, added more control over the Widgets app, boosted the speed and responsiveness of key menus and settings, improved the Windows Hello sign-in process, and reduced disruptions from Windows updates. With the help of AI, Microsoft has been breaking records each month at fixing large numbers of vulnerabilities. The combination of new interface features and the record number of patched security holes makes this an update users will want to install.
