The share of cybersecurity job postings that demand AI skills has doubled in just one year across G7 nations, now accounting for more than a quarter of all new openings, according to research published August 20 by the Cisco-founded AI Workforce Consortium. The study, which examined recruitment data from Cornerstone and Indeed, found that what it calls an "agentic skill stack" is becoming standard for high-volume security positions. Rather than eliminating jobs, AI is reshaping what cybersecurity professionals actually do day-to-day.

Between October 2025 and March 2026, 28.5% of cybersecurity job advertisements required AI capabilities, compared to just 14.2% during the same six months a year earlier, the analysis found. Demand for specific human-centered competencies surged even more dramatically: job postings seeking ethical reasoning skills climbed 533% year-over-year, systems thinking rose 251%, and stakeholder engagement increased 125%. Overall demand for cybersecurity roles grew 9.5% across G7 countries in the six months ending March 2026. But senior-level postings jumped 65% between October 2025 and March 2026, while junior-titled positions climbed only 5.9% over the same window.

The report finds that technical positions such as security operations center analysts aren't vanishing—they're evolving into less technical, more "human" functions. AI systems are taking over high-volume, repetitive work like triaging alerts, correlating threat intelligence feeds, and running standard decision-tree workflows, according to the study. Workers in roles like security engineering and SOC analysis—which remain the most sought-after cyber positions—have shifted toward strategic and oversight tasks such as validating outputs, assessing risk, and ensuring decisions hold up under scrutiny. Security teams are being reorganized around new blends of human and machine effort, the authors note.

The widening gap between senior and junior job growth stems partly from what security leaders expect from entry-level candidates—expectations that newcomers often can't meet. In a May 2026 survey cited in the report, security leaders identified the three hardest-to-find competencies in entry-level applicants as hands-on experience with AI agents (49%), deep technical cybersecurity knowledge (48%), and human-centered professional skills (45%). This "experience gap" is putting the talent pipeline under strain, the report warns. Because AI is absorbing routine tasks, the roles that remain demand more judgment, context, and strategic thinking—capabilities that can't easily be taught in a traditional classroom without real-world practice.

The authors argue that preparing the next generation of cyber talent requires a fundamental overhaul of education and training. "To better prepare students for entry-level roles, we have to rethink what gets taught, and how," the report states. That means hands-on learning, lab exercises where students audit, validate, and critically evaluate outputs generated by AI agents—not just theory. It also means expanding internships, apprenticeships, and industry-sponsored projects that give students genuine experience before they enter the workforce. The AI Workforce Consortium, launched in 2024 by Cisco alongside Accenture, Cornerstone, Eightfold AI, Google, IBM, Indeed, Intel, Microsoft, and SAP, combines original research with member insights to track these shifts. The central takeaway: AI isn't replacing cybersecurity professionals, but it's raising the bar for what they need to know and how they learn it. Organizations that fail to bridge the experience gap risk a deepening talent shortage even as demand continues to climb, leaving critical security functions understaffed at precisely the moment automation makes human oversight more—not less—essential.
