John Deere's self-repair software platform has attracted approximately a thousand daily users a year after its launch, a relatively modest figure given that roughly 1.8 million farms operate across the United States, according to a report published by WIRED. The company introduced Operations Center Pro Service in 2025 as a response to mounting legal pressure and right-to-repair advocacy, but farmers and repair advocates remain unconvinced that the tool provides adequate access to fix their increasingly complex machines. The service allows equipment owners to diagnose problems and access repair manuals by connecting John Deere's software to their tractors and other machinery via Wi-Fi or cable.
Pro Service costs $195 annually per individual machine, while larger operations or independent repair shops face annual fees starting at $4,995 to access every machine in John Deere's fleet, with agricultural and turf services priced at $5,995 per year. The platform connects to nearly every electronic-enabled machine John Deere has manufactured, pulling up instructions and images from user manuals based on each machine's serial number. Some features can be downloaded for offline use when internet connections fail during repairs. The software also includes data-sharing controls that let owners choose whether to share information with John Deere, independent repair shops, or keep it private, according to company representatives.
Jahmy Hindman, senior vice president and chief technology officer of John Deere, told WIRED that the platform is "owner-friendly" and represents the company's longstanding intent. However, Jared Wilson, a Missouri farmer who manages 3,000 acres of corn and soybean crops and served as a named plaintiff in a $99 million lawsuit against John Deere, describes the service as working best only on particularly simple repairs. Wilson doesn't use Pro Service and says the farmers he knows tend to rely on cracked versions of the software found on gray markets rather than paying John Deere. The company settled the $99 million lawsuit in April to reimburse equipment owners for burdensome repair costs, and in July reached a separate settlement with the US Federal Trade Commission requiring more repairable products, though John Deere admitted no wrongdoing in either case.
The skepticism stems from John Deere's decade-long position as a primary target of the right-to-repair movement, driven by digital locks on its high-tech software systems that require official, dealer-sanctioned approval to access. When multiple failures occur simultaneously and diagnostic codes pile up, Wilson explains, farmers struggle to determine where to begin troubleshooting. A key concern involves product improvement plans, or PIPs, which John Deere issues to alert owners about potential or existing machine problems—but only after the system has collected enough data to verify an improvement is needed. If a user encounters a novel problem, it takes time for that issue to reach John Deere, get verified, and then appear as a PIP in Pro Service, leaving the person with a broken tractor without the information needed to diagnose what's happening. Hindman acknowledges that some newer tractors contain upwards of 50 controllers, making systems "super complex," and says the company doesn't mind pressure from advocates, noting that "we are a long way towards moving the needle to a much better state."
Repair advocates argue that agricultural equipment represents a critical battleground because tractors and similar machines are built to last for years or even decades of hard manual labor. Wilson frames the dispute as extending far beyond farming: "This is an issue that's concerning agricultural equipment, but it's really the vanguard of a much bigger and persistent problem that affects every aspect of our society." Willie Cade, a board member of advocacy group Repair.org, goes further, characterizing John Deere as monopolists whose "real customer is not the farmer" but Wall Street. The company continues promoting Pro Service to increase awareness among equipment owners, though adoption remains limited a year into its availability. The question of whether manufacturers will permit owners to repair durable goods independently carries implications for consumer rights across industries, as software-controlled systems become standard in products ranging from tractors to personal electronics.
